Barcelona

Uncategorized

I’m bored, so I’m going to do the long-awaited (sort of) Barcelona-write-up before I forget too much about the experience! If you were there and have a better memory than me, please chip in so I can fill this out a bit. I’m too lazy to set up a wiki for one page.

Day 1 – Wednesday

So this was the arrival day! Got on the plane at B’ham International and after a fairly pleasant flight landed at Barcelona. Then took the Aerobus into the Plaza Catalunya in the centre of Barcelona, and from there got the Metro to where we were staying. Except the Metro was no longer going all the way to the station closest to the flat, so I had to catch a special bus laid on to replace the closed section of the Metro. Anyways, I made it, and thus ended the first day.

Day 2 – Thursday

Can’t remember. Went to the beach?

Day 3 – Friday

In the morning, went to the Sagrada Familia by Metro. We had lunch at this place just outside then bought student tickets to get inside the cathedral itself. I say cathedral, it’s more like a cathedral under construction, and also possibly one of the most fantastically ugly buildings you’ll ever see. Possibly that’s just a reflection on my design sensibilities, but there we go. We had a look round and some pictures were taken, then we headed up to one of the spires to look out at the view, which actually wasn’t half bad. We saw about two workmen all day, which is probably why it’s taking so long to finish!

Finished the day by having home-made sandwiches on the beach. At midnight some fireworks started up, and they were on the pretty spectacular side. Then we got a bit drunk and started belting out songs. It was marvelous. Then we decided to stay at the beach swimming until the sun came up the next day. Bunch of nutters, we are. By the end of the night we were absolutely freezing, but the sky was blue, so went to bed happy!

Day 4 – Saturday

The Square

In the evening headed to the Plaza Catalunya and the Hard Rock cafe to celebrate Fish being born, or something. Although by some twist of fate, we ended up having to wait for a table, and ended up in Starbucks.

Tom, Daisy and Shell drinking cofeeEmpty coffee cups Ben and Tom looking unusually thoughtful.

Anyways, we made it to Hard Rock, and had a pretty nice meal, all in all.

Shell looked oddly blurred that evening.Classy! Someone failed at eating burger. The damage.

Day 5 – Sunday

Erm… not sure…

Day 6 – Monday

Went on one heck of a walk up the coast, and eventually got the port and the column with Columbus on the top. Discovered we’d missed the boat trip for that day, so we resolved to catch it the next day (see below) and instead set out for the Barcelona F.C. ground. It was fairly alright, but it took us forever to find the entrance, and we wasted a few Euro on a rubbish 3D thing. Oh, it was so very very poor.

Day 7 – Tuesday

Dragged ourselves from our beds, and went on a catamaran on a cruise up Barcelona’s coast. It was really quite pretty.

Really cool bridge.Coastline and sky. Sail and sky. The sea through the netting we were sitting on.

Day 8 – Wednesday

Home time! We got everything packed up and ready to go, had lunch, then went with all our stuff to see off Tom & Daisy. Then after we realised the park we’d originally planned to go to was up a hill and we had heavy cases with us, we basically just spent the day bumming around, reading books and the like. Eventually we got to the airport, cleared security, only to find that our flight was delayed. By 2 hours. So there was a lot more sitting around. So much so that by the time we made it back to Birmingham, I’d ploughed through the whole of The Amber Spyglass! Anyways, eventually made it home.

And thus concludes the holiday.
