I have to say, I read the Sandman comics, and yes, they were good, but I've read better books and better comics (though not in the same kind of genre), I think Neil Gaiman's done better stuff, weirder stuff, or stuff that's just more to my taste, and I think there are better things out there in the same kind of genre. However if you did like Sandman you'd enjoy the film Franklyn which I saw just after New Year this year and was intriguing and dark and also rather good fun, and I definitely enjoyed that. And it surprised me by actually having a reasonably happy ending...! It didn't really feel as if it would.
